Teen Mob Murder: Jack Woodley Stabbed to Death at Fair

Last October, 15-year-old Jack Woodley was stabbed in the back after a night out at a fair in Houghton-le-Spring. He died in hospital the next day.

In June, ten boys aged 14 to 18 were found guilty of the brutal attack at Newcastle Crown Court. Witnesses described Jack being surrounded and “isolated” by a mob relentlessly attacking him “like zombies.”

Life Sentence for Teen Killer

The 15-year-old who delivered the fatal stab pleaded guilty to manslaughter but was convicted of murder by the jury. Judge Rodney Jameson slammed him:

“Having a knife was no secret. You knew Jack was unarmed. Yet you chose violence. You stabbed yourself once, then fatally stabbed him in the back. You’re serving a sentence longer than your life. You’ll be 32 before you’re eligible for release.”

The Younger Defendants: Vulnerable or Guilty?

The 14-year-old received a minimum eight-year sentence. The judge noted he was a “vulnerable young boy” with a learning disability limiting his understanding.

“What you did was wrong, but you’re less to blame than the others. Custody may be harder for you. You’ll be eligible for release at 22.”

Disturbing Footage and Ongoing Appeals

Mobile phone clips played in court showed the gang closing in on Jack as someone shouted, “Get the chopper out!” The attack involved punching, kicking, and stamping—witnesses said it was like “animals attacking prey.”

Before sentencing, nine defendants launched appeals against their convictions. The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed they had received nine notices of appeal.
