Landlord Jailed After Tenant Dies in Deadly Basement Blaze

Philip Sheridan, 32, tragically died from severe smoke inhalation after a fire tore through the illegally converted basement where he lived in Harehills, Leeds.

The blaze broke out on June 26, 2019, but Mr Sheridan clung to life until July 6, when complications from the smoke proved fatal.

Shahid Slapped with Immediate Jail Term

Humrazz Shahid, 43, the landlord responsible for managing the property since 2008, was sentenced to 13 months behind bars at 1 Crown Court today.

Though Shahid wasn’t the legal owner, he admitted failing to meet his duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, putting tenants’ lives at risk.

No Fire Alarms, No Escape in Danger Spot

Investigations revealed the converted cellar had no smoke or fire alarms. Both the fire service and local council condemned the unsafe conditions that led to this avoidable tragedy.

Shahid had signed the tenancy agreement with Mr Sheridan back in August 2013, making him responsible for the property’s management despite lacking ownership.

Police and Council Warn Other Landlords

“The death of Philip Sheridan was an absolute tragedy but one completely avoidable if Shahid had taken safety seriously,” said Detective Superintendent Marc Bowes of West Yorkshire Police.

“We hope this successful prosecution sends a stark warning to landlords and property managers: put your tenants’ safety first or face the consequences.”

Leeds City Council worked closely with police to bring Shahid to justice, highlighting the vital role of enforcement in protecting tenants from dangerous living conditions.
