Boyfriend and Mum Jailed for Murder of Toddler Kyrell Matthews

Brutal Abuse Led to Toddler’s Death

Kyrell Matthews suffered horrific injuries throughout his short life before dying in October 2019. On 4 March at London’s Old Bailey, Kemar Brown, 28, of Bensham Manor Road, Thornton Heath, was found guilty of Kyrell’s murder. He was also convicted of causing or allowing serious physical harm to the young child.

Kyrell’s mother, Phylesia Shirley, 24, from the same address, was found guilty of manslaughter after pleading guilty early on to allowing Kyrell’s death and abuse.

Life and Decade-Long Sentences for Abusers

On 25 March, Brown was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 25 years behind bars. Shirley received a 13-year sentence.

Shocking Evidence and Police Response

Detective Chief Inspector Kate Kieran of the Met’s Specialist Crime said: “This was a horrific case with truly appalling injuries inflicted on Kyrell. It was not a one-off outburst but repeated abuse, culminating in a final brutal assault that ended his short life.”

Kieran added: “It’s hard to understand how his own mother and her boyfriend could do such terrible harm to a defenceless child. Our team was deeply affected by the audio evidence of his abuse, yet stayed determined to see justice done.”

Disturbing Audio Reveals Repeated Torture

The court heard how Kyrell’s injuries included torn liver, broken ribs – 41 fractures over five separate assaults – and other signs of ongoing cruel treatment. Audio recordings on Shirley’s phone captured harrowing sounds of Kyrell being beaten, with both Brown and Shirley heard abusing him.

Samantha Yelland from the Crown Prosecution Service said: “Kyrell endured violent, repeated assaults that caused him unimaginable pain before his death. As his mother, Shirley should have protected him, but instead allowed this abuse to happen.”

Family Mourn Loss of Little Kyrell

Kyrell’s family paid tribute, saying: “Kyrell – you were robbed of the life God had intended. We’ve been robbed of watching you grow and seeing what you would have become. You have left a void in our hearts that will never be filled. We carry you in our hearts forever.”

Final Moments and Investigation

Kyrell’s mother called the NHS helpline on 20 October 2019, reporting he was unwell with rolling eyes and breathing trouble. Paramedics arrived quickly but found no heartbeat. Despite attempts to save him, Kyrell was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at hospital.

Police initially treated Brown and Shirley as witnesses but the post-mortem revealed the full horror. The child suffered multiple injuries over weeks leading to death by blunt trauma to the abdomen. A homicide inquiry swiftly followed.

Brown and Shirley denied abuse during police interviews, but the chilling audio recordings left no doubt. Both were charged with murder and cruelty, and justice was finally delivered.
