15 Firefighters Hospitalised After Huge Chemical Leak in West Thurrock

Fifteen firefighters were rushed to hospital following a massive chemical leak at an industrial site in West Thurrock on Monday afternoon. The dramatic incident erupted around 4.30pm and sparked a multi-agency emergency response.

Massive Chemical Spill Sparks Evacuation and Road Closures

The chemical leak occurred at the ICL business on Oliver Road, prompting a large-scale evacuation. Emergency services locked down the area as a huge chemical cloud billowed above the building. Roads around the industrial estate have been shut by police, who urged locals to steer clear of the danger zone.

Witnesses reported seeing multiple fire engines, ambulances, police vehicles, and a specialist HAZMAT unit rushing to the scene. A 100-metre exclusion zone was swiftly established to protect residents and workers nearby.

Firefighters Treated and Released After Exposure

Fifteen firefighters were taken to local hospitals overnight as a precaution. Thankfully, after assessments, all were released shortly after receiving treatment. Deputy Chief Fire Officer Rick Hylton praised the teamwork involved, saying:

“The hard work and dedication of our staff and team work across agencies has meant that as things currently stand we have the incident contained and a plan in place to successfully and safely resolve the incident.”

“We are looking at hours rather than days to resolve this. Our priority remains the safety of everyone on scene and nearby residents.”

Safety Warnings for Locals: Stay Indoors and Close Windows

Residents in West Thurrock have been told to keep all doors and windows sealed and to switch off vehicle air conditioning to avoid inhaling fumes. Public Health England advises anyone with respiratory issues to stay prepared with medication and call 111 if feeling unwell.

Emergency services including Essex Police, East of England Ambulance Service, Public Health England, Thurrock Council, and the Environment Agency continue to manage this ongoing chemical emergency.
