Top Cop Suspended Over Data Scandal Shaking Thames Valley Police

Chief Constable Jason Hogg, head of one of England’s biggest police forces, Thames Valley Police (TVP), has been suspended instantly amid a gross misconduct probe. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is digging into claims about his bungled handling of a serious data breach involving sensitive police info from 2016 to 2020.

Shock Suspension Over Data Drama

The IOPC’s investigation focuses on whether Hogg failed to properly investigate allegations that a former senior officer unlawfully held on to sensitive police data after leaving the force. Steve Noonan, IOPC’s director of operations, stressed that suspension is not proof of guilt and no criminal charges have been filed yet.

A second senior Thames Valley officer is also under the microscope for possible misconduct linked to the same case.

Force Bosses Speak Out

Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Barber confirmed Hogg’s suspension and promised an interim chief would be named by January’s end. He called the suspension a “neutral act” and urged patience while the facts come to light.

“This will shock many at Thames Valley, especially our hardworking officers and staff,” Barber said. “But it’s right these serious allegations are investigated thoroughly.”

Deputy Chief Constable Ben Snuggs is now in charge until a permanent replacement is confirmed.

Rapid Rise and Sudden Fall

Jason Hogg took over as Chief Constable in April 2023 after seven years with TVP. The force polices a whopping 2.34 million people across Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and Berkshire. It’s England’s fifth-largest force, employing around 1,200 officers and staff.

The IOPC probe follows a concluded investigation into the former senior officer accused of hoarding data illegally. That case’s file has been sent to the Crown Prosecution Service for review.

What’s Next for Thames Valley?

The IOPC promises a fair, no-nonsense investigation. If disciplinary action is needed, it will come. Meanwhile, Commissioner Barber underscores the need to keep public trust strong during this rocky period.
