Murder Mystery in Harlow: Two Held After Body Found in Pond
Body Identified as Local Man “Scottish Phil”
Police have arrested two men after the body of a 59-year-old was found in a pond near Harlow’s hospital. The victim has been named as Phillip Lewis, known affectionately as “Scottish Phil” by friends. His remains were discovered on New Year’s Eve in Oakwood Pond, Essex, after a member of the public spotted a suspicious object in the water.
Two Arrested on Murder and Conspiracy Charges
Essex Police confirmed a 52-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder, alongside a 23-year-old held on suspicion of conspiracy to murder. Both are local Harlow residents and currently in custody. Officers say Phil was well-known in the town with a “wide circle of friends.”
Intensive Investigation Underway
Following the grim discovery, a murder probe was launched immediately. Detective Superintendent Rob Kirby vowed his team will “work tirelessly” to bring those behind Phil’s death to justice. Police started draining the pond this week to search for vital clues explaining how the body ended up submerged.
“It’s critical to identify potentially vital evidence,” said Det Supt Kirby.
Police Plea: CCTV and Witnesses Needed
Detectives are calling on locals to check doorbell and CCTV footage from early November onwards. They want anyone who’s had contact with Phil or noticed suspicious activity near the pond over the past two months to come forward.
“Any information, no matter how minor, could be critical,” Kirby stressed. “We also urge anyone who regularly visits the area to step forward.”
Police are conducting door-to-door inquiries and expect the cordon around Oakwood Pond to stay for several more days.
