Tragic Crash on Bay Gate Way: 74-Year-Old Passenger Dies
Police rushed to the scene around 1pm on Wednesday, August 4, after a two-car crash on Bay Gate Way. A Honda Jazz and a BMW M5 collided, sending the Honda overturning.
Pauline Edwards Fatally Injured
Among the injured was 74-year-old Pauline Edwards from Heysham, a passenger in the Honda. She suffered serious injuries and was taken to Royal Preston Hospital but sadly later died.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Pauline Edwards in a road traffic collision on August 4,” said her family.
Pauline was a beloved teacher at lancaster/" title="Lancaster" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Lancaster Road Primary School for 40 years, remembered for her radiant smile and generous spirit. She was the widow of James Edwards and leaves behind two sons and many close friends.
“Pauline will be very much missed by all those who knew and loved her. The family also appeals for any witnesses to come forward who saw the collision or were on Bay Gate Way around that time.”
Multiple Injuries and Hit-and-Run Probe
- The 82-year-old Honda driver from Morecambe suffered hip and facial injuries and was hospitalised.
- A second woman, 80, also from Morecambe, had minor injuries.
- The BMW driver, a man in his 50s from Heysham, sustained minor injuries.
- A passenger in the BMW, a woman in her 30s from Heysham, was treated for whiplash.
Officers later learned a third BMW was involved but fled the scene. A 31-year-old man from the Isle of Man was arrested in connection with the incident and the missing vehicle was recovered in Nottinghamshire.
The man was arrested on suspicion of causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving. He has since been released under investigation.
