Shock in North London After Man Dies Following Police Welfare Check
The Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) and North Area Command Unit are working closely with local agencies and the community after a tragic incident in James Gardens, N22.
Senior Detective Speaks Out
Detective Chief Inspector Aman Dhaliwal, leading the inquiry, said:
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased, who lost him in sudden and upsetting circumstances. The Met promptly alerted the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) when the man became unwell, following procedure. The IOPC has now referred the investigation back to the Met for local progress.”
“This man was well known in his community, and his untimely death has shocked many. I urge the public to avoid speculation out of respect for his family and to prevent unnecessary distress before the facts are known.”
“Let me be clear: this case remains extremely serious. The DPS will independently review all body-worn camera footage, officer accounts, and witness statements to fully understand what happened.”
“A family liaison officer is supporting the man’s family, and updates will be provided as the investigation continues.”
The Incident: What Happened?
- A member of the public called police at 8:07 pm on Thursday, July 22, over welfare concerns for a man in his 30s at a residential address in James Gardens.
- The man reportedly had a knife and behaved erratically, alarming those around him.
- Officers arrived to find him distressed and worked to calm him before urgently calling the London Ambulance Service.
- Fearing harm to himself or others, officers briefly handcuffed the man as a safety measure.
- He was taken to a north London hospital, where his condition worsened and he tragically died at 6:56 pm on Saturday, July 24.
- A post-mortem is scheduled for Tuesday, July 27.
- The DPS notified the IOPC, as is standard procedure in such cases.
Police Commander Responds to Tragic Outcome
Chief Superintendent Treena Fleming, in charge of policing for Haringey and Enfield, said:
“This was a distressing incident, and everyone in the North Area forces shares their deepest sympathies with the man’s family and friends during this difficult time. A thorough investigation is underway to clarify the circumstances.”
“Our officers responded bravely to a challenging and upsetting call. They prevented the man from further injury and quickly arranged medical help, also ensuring the safety of those nearby.”
“I respectfully ask the public to avoid speculation while we review body-cam footage and collect statements from officers and witnesses. Transparency is vital, and we will share further information as soon as we can.”
