Peter ‘Mitch’ Mitchell, a former British Army Paratrooper from Plymouth, has been reunited with his stolen war medals after five long years. His treasured medals were taken during a 2019 burglary that also saw jewellery and gold coins swiped from his home.
Stolen Medals Linked to Heroic Humanitarian Mission
Mr Mitchell earned these medals during Operation Haven in 1991 – a heroic mission supporting Kurdish refugees fleeing Saddam Hussein’s forces. He served first in the Parachute Regiment before moving to the Royal Logistic Corps.
Community Group Cracks Cold Case With Pillowcase Clue
The breakthrough came courtesy of Clean Our Patch, a local Plymouth community interest group. They discovered a pillowcase stuffed with old coins, jewellery, and war medals dumped near a former railway depot in Laira. A viral social media post helped identify the items as Mr Mitchell’s stolen trove.
“It was incredible timing,” said Mr Mitchell, who was supporting cancer patients in Exeter when he heard the news. “The medals were found the very day my door – smashed in the burglary – was being replaced.”
Sentimental Value Beats Price Tag for Vet
Many of the stolen items had little monetary worth but held huge emotional value, especially a rare jade Buddha pendant. Reflecting on his Army days, Mr Mitchell recalled the bitter cold and the meaningful work alongside US troops during Operation Haven.
Police Praise Community Efforts in Medal Recovery
The Priority Crime Investigation Team hailed the recovery as proof of the power of local communities and police determination. They urge burglary victims never to lose hope, highlighting this reunion as a shining example of what can be achieved.
