Residents across Brighton and Hove are being encouraged to take advantage of new digital support resources designed to help people use the internet, improve their technology skills and access essential online services.

Brighton & Hove City Council has launched an updated digital support directory, an interactive map and a printable information guide as part of Get Online Week, which runs from 19 to 25 October 2026.

The resources bring together assistance offered by local charities, libraries and community organisations, helping residents find support suited to their needs and experience.

From first-time internet users to people looking to build confidence using smartphones, computers and online services, the initiative aims to make digital technology more accessible.

New Digital Support Directory Launched Across the City

The council’s updated directory provides information about digital drop-in sessions, individual appointments and training courses available across Brighton and Hove.

An interactive map also allows residents and support workers to search for services by location.

A printable guide has been produced for people who would prefer information on paper or need assistance from a relative, friend or support worker.

The resources are intended to make it easier to find existing local support without having to contact multiple organisations.

Helping People Access NHS Services, Employment and Everyday Essentials

The council says digital exclusion can prevent people from accessing services increasingly delivered online.

These include booking medical appointments, using the NHS App, applying for employment, managing finances and communicating with friends and family.

People with limited access to devices, affordable internet connections or basic digital training may face additional obstacles.

Older residents, disabled people, those on low incomes and some minority communities can be particularly affected by these barriers.

The council hopes that bringing support services together will help residents become more confident and independent.

Free Digital Skills Sessions and One-to-One Support

The directory includes community-based assistance with everyday technology.

Support ranges from learning to use smartphones and tablets to writing emails, completing online forms, searching for jobs and accessing public services.

Local organisations listed include AbilityNet, Age UK, community learning providers and library-based support services.

Residents can also find digital skills courses designed for beginners and those wishing to improve their existing abilities.

Many activities are available free of charge, although some services may have eligibility requirements or fees.

Councillor Says Digital Skills Can Transform Lives

Councillor Jacob Allen, Brighton & Hove City Council’s Cabinet Member for Customer Services, Public Realm and Local Government, said improving access to digital technology could make a significant difference to people’s lives.

He said:

“We know that not everyone has had the same opportunities to get online, and for some people technology can feel overwhelming or out of reach.”

Councillor Allen said the new resources brought together practical local assistance, helping residents identify support that matched their individual circumstances.

The council stressed that digital inclusion is about more than simply learning to use technology.

Being able to connect online can help people maintain relationships, access healthcare, seek employment and participate more fully in their communities.

More Support Planned for Residents Without Internet Access

The resources form part of Brighton & Hove City Council’s wider efforts to tackle digital exclusion.

Further improvements are planned, including clearer information about places offering free internet access and organisations that can help people obtain suitable devices.

The council is encouraging residents who need support, along with relatives, carers and community workers assisting others, to make use of the information.

How to Find Digital Support in Brighton and Hove

Residents can access the council’s updated Digital Support Directory to find local drop-ins, individual appointments and training opportunities.

The interactive map allows users to select the Digital Support category to identify nearby services.

A printable version is also available, helping people who do not yet have reliable internet access.

The initiative was introduced during Get Online Week, a national campaign organised by the Good Things Foundation to encourage digital participation.
