Promising Junior Doctor Dies in Horrific Crash on Garstang Road

Jyothis Manalayil, 28, known as Jyo, tragically lost his life in a collision on Garstang Road (A586) on Friday, June 10. The Bolton-based junior doctor was driving a Kia Ceed when it smashed into a Range Rover. Jyo succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

A Rising Star in Medicine Snapped Away

Jyo was returning from a night shift at Lancaster Royal Infirmary, heading to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Blackpool to teach medical students. His family described him as “an unusually kind and exceptionally bright” individual devoted to caring for others.

Since graduating in 2017, Jyo had rapidly climbed the ranks, passing his Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA) exams on his first attempt. He excelled both academically and clinically, working tirelessly as a trainee anaesthetist and spending nearly two years caring for patients in Salford Royal ICU through the first wave of the pandemic.

A Compassionate Colleague and Patient Advocate

Known for his dedication and warmth, Jyo was not only a skilled doctor but also a beloved team member who supported colleagues during the most stressful shifts. He was passionate about mental health awareness, and championed equality and diversity within the NHS.

“Jyo was compassionate, dedicated, and always went above and beyond for his patients — arranging dental appointments or simply making a cup of tea while sharing his terrible jokes. He genuinely cared about his coworkers and patients alike,” said a family spokesperson.

Jyo’s enthusiasm for teaching shone through as he led advanced life support courses and delivered delirium lectures. His patients treasured his calm, respectful manner and unwavering commitment to treating everyone with dignity.

Remembering Jyo: A Light Extinguished Too Soon

His family paid tribute to the “selfless love and loyalty” he showed to both patients and colleagues. “Jyo, you will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing you. Your kindness made those around you smile, and your legacy will live on in the hearts of many. May you rest in peace.”
