A2 Shutdown Chaos: Lorry Fire Near Dartford Sparks Massive Traffic Nightmare

Commuters were left fuming this morning as the A2 ground to a halt in both directions near Dartford. A lorry fire on the eastbound carriageway sparked long delays between the M25/A282 and B255.

Full Closure Causes Gridlock

The blaze brought the A2 to a complete standstill. Emergency crews scrambled to the scene, with fire engines seen racing up the hard shoulder amid thick black smoke clouds. Kent Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they are tackling the fire using hose reel jets and breathing apparatus. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire remains unknown. Meanwhile, diesel spillage across the road means the closure looks set to last for some time as recovery efforts continue.

Traffic Mayhem: Massive Queues Build

National Highways reported a 2-mile tailback eastbound and a 4-mile jam westbound. Motorists are urged to expect delays and factor in extra journey time.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Kent Fire and Rescue Service is responding to a lorry fire on the A2 coast-bound, between Dartford and Bean. Three fire engines and a bulk water carrier are at the scene. Crews wearing breathing apparatus are extinguishing the fire. There are no injuries.”

Diversion Routes to Beat the Traffic

Eastbound drivers should follow the solid circle diversion signs:

  • Exit A2 at Darenth interchange and join A282 northbound towards Dartford
  • Leave A282 at junction 1A
  • At the first roundabout, take third exit onto A206 eastbound, then keep left for fast slip road to Bluewater
  • Stay on A206 for 2 miles to B255 junction
  • At roundabout, take second exit onto B255 southbound towards Bean
  • Exit B255 at junction with A296
  • At next roundabout, keep left for fast slip onto A296 eastbound towards Dover and rejoin A2 eastbound

If you’re travelling through Dartford, expect delays and consider re-routing or postponing your journey. Keep an eye on Traffic England for updates.

Stay safe and patient while the A2 clearance is underway.
