Fatal Addison Lee Taxi Crash Shuts M23 and A23
A deadly crash involving an Addison Lee taxi has sparked chaos on the M23 and A23 this morning (Saturday 16 August), shutting key routes and snarling traffic heading into London.
Major Road Closures and Delays
The smash happened near Merstham just before 6.30am. Emergency crews rushed to the scene after reports of a serious collision.
The northbound M23 is closed between Junction 8 and Junction 7, while sections of the A23 northbound from Glebe Road to Dean Lane are also shut. Drivers are urged to avoid the area and find alternative routes as severe delays continue.
Police Confirm Fatality, Launch Investigation
Surrey Police confirmed at least one person has died. A spokesperson said:
“Officers are currently on scene at a serious collision in Merstham. The M23 northbound carriageway is currently closed between J8 and J7. There are also closures on the A23 northbound between Glebe Road and Dean Lane.
Please avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible. We will provide an update as soon as we are able.”
Police Appeal for Witnesses and Footage
Investigators want anyone who witnessed the crash or has CCTV, dashcam, or helmet camera footage to come forward. The force added:

The collision has also caused tailbacks on the M25 due to diverted traffic. Authorities continue to manage the disruption as investigations progress.
