An Amtrak train travelling from Mobile, Alabama, to New Orleans struck a commercial truck hauling vehicles on US Highway 90 near Grand Bay early on Sunday morning, April 26, 2026. The crash occurred around 6:55 a.m. local time on CSX tracks south of Mobile, with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency and Mobile County Sheriff responding to the scene. While 48 passengers on board were unharmed, several crew members and the truck driver sustained minor injuries.
Truck Stuck On Tracks
According to Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch, the collision happened after the truck became stuck on the railway track. One of the vehicles being transported by the truck overturned as a result of the impact. Emergency teams treated crew members for minor injuries at the scene.
Train Off Rails
The Amtrak train was pushed slightly off the rails during the incident. Passengers were safely disembarked and provided with snack packs and water. The train is being pulled back to Mobile by an engine, where travellers will be offered alternate transport to New Orleans.
Authorities Investigate
Amtrak is cooperating with local law enforcement as the investigation into the incident continues. The company emphasised their focus on preventing rail incidents and noted that trespassing and grade crossing accidents are the leading causes of rail fatalities nationally.
Road Closure And Past Incidents
Highway 90 near the tracks remains closed while the investigation and clearance operations are underway. This incident follows a fatal collision earlier this year where a car and an Amtrak train collided in Mobile County, killing a mother and her daughter.
Amtrak statement: “There have been no reported injuries to the 48 passengers onboard, but several crew members were treated at the scene for injuries. We are working closely with local authorities to determine the cause of this incident.”
