Chaos as Van Blaze Forces Blackwall Tunnel Evacuations
Drivers were forced to abandon their cars and flee on foot after a van erupted in flames inside the Blackwall Tunnel today (Wednesday, August 28) at around 12:15 p.m. The fire sparked a full closure of the tunnel in both directions, wreaking havoc on traffic between Greenwich and Poplar.
Fire Brigade Battles Blaze as Tunnel Goes Up in Smoke
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) rushed crews from Lewisham, Poplar, and Millwall to the scene. The ferocious fire was under control by 1:20 p.m., but the van was completely destroyed.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported. London Ambulance Service (LAS) attended the scene with ambulance crews, an incident response officer, and the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART). One person was checked over but declined hospital treatment.
Traffic Nightmare: Delays Stretch for Miles
The fire caused severe tailbacks stretching from Greenwich to Poplar. Congestion piled up on the Woolwich Road Flyover, Blackwall Lane, and nearby streets. Transport for London confirmed bus route 108 had to be diverted.
Shocking footage shows panicked drivers fleeing the tunnel, clutching belongings as thick smoke billowed out.
Ongoing Disruption and Advice for Drivers
The tunnel remained partially closed as recovery teams worked through the afternoon. One lane of two stayed shut, with no confirmed reopening time.
Authorities urge motorists to avoid the area and expect delays on alternative routes including Woolwich Ferry, Rotherhithe Tunnel, and Tower Bridge.
