Blackwall Tunnel shuts down overnight this Friday for crucial Silvertown Tunnel roadworks!
Major Night Closure Alert
The Blackwall Tunnel will close southbound only from 11pm Friday, October 18, until 8am Saturday, October 19. This is all to make way for a new road layout as part of the Silvertown Tunnel Project on the A102.
What This Means for Drivers
- Northbound traffic can still use the tunnel but watch out for diversions on the approach. At times, northbound vehicles may even be redirected through the southbound tunnel.
- HGVs and large vehicles should steer clear of central London routes due to size and weight restrictions on some river crossings.
Why The Silvertown Tunnel Matters
The Silvertown Tunnel is a 1.4km tunnel with a dedicated bus lane designed to slash congestion and boost connectivity across East London. Proposed back in 2012, it got the green light from the Secretary of State for Transport in 2018.
Travel Tips
- Plan ahead: Check your routes before you hit the road to avoid nasty surprises.
- Allow extra time: Expect delays and give yourself plenty of wiggle room on journey times.
Heads up: The congestion charge will still apply during the closure, so don’t forget to pay up if you’re driving through London.
Bus Riders Rejoice
Bus route 108 won’t be interrupted. Buses will be escorted through the tunnel all night, keeping your journey smooth.
