Freezing UK Braced for Snow and Ice as Temperatures Plunge
Britain is now gripped by a blast of bone-chilling cold, with daytime highs stuck in single digits and overnight temperatures plunging well below freezing across most regions. Don’t expect relief this weekend – the frosty grip is here to stay.
Snow Settles in Scotland and Beyond
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Frank Saunders warns: “Snow has already settled in parts of eastern Scotland and the high grounds of northeastern England. The southwest isn’t spared either – Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor have seen snow turning up and sticking as cold air blankets the UK. Some sleet and snow are falling to lower levels too, but mostly not settling there.”
Snow showers will continue today, with more accumulation likely over higher ground. Rain could bring icy patches overnight as temperatures routinely dip below freezing. Several National Severe Weather Warnings are in force and expected to be updated. Stay tuned to your local forecast.
Cold Snap to Last Into Next Week
The chill won’t ease anytime soon. The UK remains locked in a cold north-easterly airflow. Many areas can expect dry, sunny spells, but eastern coastal zones face more showers, possibly wintry. Southern and central England will see the weather grow more unsettled and milder, yet the north keeps bracing for wintry showers along the coast.
The UKHSA has issued yellow and amber cold-health alerts across England until December 5 to prepare the health sector for the freezing spell.
Experts Tell You How to Prepare
Snow in late autumn or early winter usually doesn’t linger, as the ground retains some warmth from the preceding months. But that doesn’t mean Brits should get complacent.
Dale Hipkiss, National Network Manager at National Highways, urged drivers: “Freezing conditions bring hazards like snow and ice. Keep a torch and warm clothes in your car – they could prove vital if you get stuck. Always plan your journey, check the weather, and allow extra travel time. If conditions worsen, adjust your driving and take care.”
He added: “If you find yourself in trouble, call emergency services immediately. We also have a guide to travelling in severe weather on our website. Checking your vehicle’s tyres, coolant and oil ahead of time can help prevent breakdowns.”
