Ex-Headteacher Jailed for Decades of School Sex Abuse
Creighton Muirhead, 67, from Lechlade, Gloucestershire, has been convicted of 23 sexual offences against 19 former pupils. The attacks happened between 1980 and 2008 at schools in Dorking and Swindon.
Victims Speak Out About Lasting Trauma
The victims, boys and girls from The Ruskin School in Swindon and The Weald School in Beare Green, Dorking, have shared harrowing accounts of their abuse. One victim said Muirhead’s actions caused her “deep mistrust of teachers, schools and the education system as a whole.”
“School should be a place that you feel safe and happy to learn and thrive. Creighton Muirhead made school for me a place of fear, dread and disgust. His abuse left my senior school years completely devoid of motivation and filled with constant struggle in an environment I saw as dangerous.”
She added: “As a parent, I now struggle to entrust my children to other adults. The impact has made me an overly paranoid and anxious parent.”
Another victim revealed she gave up the sport she loved because of “low self-esteem, insecurity, and distrust of men.” Speaking on coming forward in 2018, she said: “Each day I relive what happened, struggling to understand how someone in authority could do this to a child. The anger and self-blame are overwhelming, but I know now it was not my fault.”
Police Reveal Lengthy and Complex Investigation
During an eight-week trial, the court heard Muirhead targeted female pupils during gymnastics lessons at The Ruskin School between 1999 and 2004, while serving as headteacher—without classroom duties. Warnings were raised at the time, triggering a police probe in 2004, but no charges followed then.
Subsequent witness accounts and fresh evidence led to charges being laid years later. Similar assaults at The Weald School in the 1980s were also revealed, with victims targeted multiple times.
A further victim came forward in 2020 after seeing press reports of Muirhead’s charges.
Police Praise Victims’ Bravery and Stress Zero Tolerance
Detective Inspector Paddy Mayers, Surrey Police’s Complex Abuse Unit, said:
“I pay tribute to the victims who helped bring Muirhead to justice. He abused his position at different schools across counties for decades, betraying the trust pupils placed in him.”
Detective Sergeant Ross Linaker called Muirhead a “sexual predator” whose offending “cannot be underestimated” and vowed law enforcement will leave no stone unturned.
Lead Investigator Detective Constable Tom Gilbert added:
“I thank the victims for their courage. There is no hiding place for people committing crimes like these.”
