Family Holiday Horror: Toddler Rushed to Hospital After Butlin’s Slide Shambles
A family trip to Butlin’s ended in nightmare when a 5-year-old girl was rushed to hospital with a serious head injury after a terrifying accident on a slide.
Chaos on the Slide
Rhia went down the slide several times. Each time, the lifeguard at the top told her to send her arm bands and rubber ring down first. Her parent decided to try the slide too. When asked whether to sit up or lie back, the lifeguard said it was up to them.
Choosing to lie back, they sped down—but tragedy struck. Approaching the bottom, the parent saw Rhia was still in the water. Unable to stop or change course, they collided feet-first with Rhia, who was hurled into the shallow pool below. Her head smashed the bottom, splitting her scalp open.
Shocking Lifeguard Neglect
Blood gushing and Rhia screaming in pain, the parent expected immediate help. Shockingly, no lifeguards rushed over. None were visible. Only when another swimmer was flagged down was a lifeguard finally summoned.
At first aid, staff refused to call an ambulance. “The ambulance won’t come, they have an issue with this place,” they said. They admitted injuries like this “happen a lot,” yet denied having lifeguards stationed at the slide bottom — despite the obvious risks.
Hospital Horror and No Accountability
Rhia needed surgery to stitch her head, leaving a 4cm scar and possible permanent numbness on her forehead. The ordeal meant two hospital visits totaling over 14 hours—ruining the family holiday and terrifying the sibling.
Back at Butlin’s, no one checked on them. A staff member offered a “gesture of goodwill” holiday voucher, but refused to accept responsibility. The voucher only covers a fraction of future holiday costs, leaving the family out of pocket by up to £2000.
Worse still, the centre lost some of their belongings during the hospital dash, and a missed meal was only promised a voucher for future use.
Family Feels Abandoned
“I felt alone. It seemed like they didn’t care and tried to cover it up,” the parent said. Struggling to stay strong for her children, she now speaks out to warn others. “It’s terrifying to think what could’ve happened if I wasn’t there.”
This shocking ordeal raises serious questions about safety and staff responsibility at Butlin’s. Will the holiday giant answer for this family’s nightmare?
