The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has launched a probe after a heartbreaking accident in Kenley. On the morning of 23 January 2025, a child was fatally struck by a train while crossing the Bourneview footpath at around 8:04am.
The youngster was making their way across the railway where two residential areas meet when a train hurtling at 50 mph (80 km/h) smashed into them. Despite safety gates and clear warning signs, the child suffered fatal injuries.
RAIB Launches Urgent Investigation
The RAIB confirmed an independent inquiry is now underway to piece together exactly what happened. Investigators will examine:
- Why the child crossed as they did.
- Any past incidents at Bourneview crossing.
- Network Rail’s risk management and safety strategy at this location.
- Any deeper safety concerns linked to the tragedy.
