Covid Hero Biniam Walks Out of Hospital to Thunderous Applause

The UK’s first Covid-19 patient at Darent Valley Hospital has beaten the odds. On April 7th, Uber driver Biniam left the intensive care unit (ITU). Today, the 43-year-old took his first steps out of the hospital, heading home to cheers from staff.

From Venice Holiday to Life-Threatening Battle

Biniam, originally from Eritrea and living in the UK for 15 years, fell ill after a Valentine’s Day trip to Venice. He was admitted to Darent Valley Hospital on March 22nd. As his condition worsened, he was rushed to ITU and spent 12 nerve-wracking days on a ventilator.

Steady Recovery and Heartfelt Cheers

After a steady improvement, Biniam was moved from ITU to Beech Ward on Tuesday. Now strong enough to leave hospital, he’s finally reunited with his family.

“We wish him a speedy recovery and well done to all the staff involved in his care and all of our other patients,” the hospital said.
