Emergency teams sprang into action in Lewes after a bus erupted in flames at a petrol station in the early hours of Monday.
Fire Breaks Out on Brighton Road
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) were called at 2:09am on 29 September 2025 following reports of a large vehicle fire on Brighton Road. The blaze broke out on a bus travelling east between Lewes and Falmer but quickly spread to the petrol station shop, triggering a major emergency.
Massive Operation with Six Breathing Apparatus Deployed
- Four fire engines raced from Preston Circus, Hove, and Roedean to the scene.
- Crews initially battled the fire using two breathing apparatus sets and two foam jets.
- By 3:30am, the response ramped up to six breathing apparatus sets, two foam jets, and one main jet to tackle the growing flames.
Sussex Police are managing the resulting traffic chaos as firefighters work relentlessly to bring the blaze under control.
Warning to Drivers and Locals
Authorities have urged motorists to avoid Brighton Road completely. Nearby residents are advised to keep windows and doors shut due to thick smoke engulfing the area. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported at this time.
