Massive Blaze Erupts at Derelict Cinema in Kingston
A major fire tore through an old, abandoned cinema site in Kingston this afternoon, sparking a huge response from the London Fire Brigade (LFB). The dramatic blaze kicked off around 2pm on Sunday, March 16, near the Gala Bingo hall on Richmond Road, Kingston upon Thames.
Huge Fire Brigade Deployment to Tackle Flames
Firefighters scrambled with a massive force: 25 fire engines and two aerial ladder platforms were rushed to the scene as thick smoke billowed from the crumbling building. Crews worked flat-out to contain the fire and stop it spreading to nearby properties.
Eyewitnesses reported towering smoke clouds, prompting emergency services to seal off the area. Several roads around Richmond Road have been shut to keep the public safe while firefighters battle the blaze.
London Fire Brigade: ‘Steady Progress Being Made’
London Fire Brigade confirmed that crews from multiple stations, including Kingston, Surbiton, New Malden, Twickenham, and Richmond, were mobilised due to the scale of the inferno.
Station Commander Will Thompson, speaking from the scene, said: “Crews are making steady progress in tackling the fire.” He added, “Road closures are in place, and we urge people to avoid the area to reduce disruption.”
“Two of our 32-metre turntable ladders are being used as observation towers to give commanders an aerial view,” Thompson explained, highlighting the tactical efforts on the ground.
There are currently no reports of injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Derelict Cinema Sparks Longstanding Concerns
The dilapidated site, once home to a cinema and standing derelict for several years next to Gala Bingo, has been a source of worry for local residents. Concerns over fire risks and anti-social behaviour have been raised repeatedly, with calls for redevelopment or better security.
Authorities are urging locals to steer clear of the Richmond Road area as crews work to secure the scene. Further updates, including traffic advice and investigation results, will be issued as information emerges.
