Missing Pro-Palestine Campaigner Sparks Community Alarm in Hackney
Urgent Appeal to Find Tony McKenzie
Police have launched a desperate search for Tony McKenzie, 58, a well-known pro-Palestine activist from Lower Clapton, Hackney. Tony, who has been missing for weeks, is famed for leading London’s “Great Ride of Return” — a fortnightly bike ride raising funds for the Gaza Sun Birds aid group.
Described as a “beloved community figure,” his sudden disappearance has left locals deeply worried.
Last Seen Weeks Ago – Confusion Reigns
Tony was last spotted on February 19 but wasn’t reported missing until March 26, leaving a confusing gap that’s baffling police and friends. His bicycle was still at his flat when police searched, adding to the mystery surrounding his absence.
Community Band Together in Search
Nearly 200 neighbours, friends, and activists have joined forces as the “Find Tony Team.” They’re leafleting north London streets and flooding social media with appeals to track him down.
Eleanor Thorn, close friend, said: “It’s incredibly worrying. Tony’s bicycle was still at his flat when police searched it. He’s been such a man of the community. I go to lots of film screenings and talks about Palestine, and he’s always there, always so nice and lovely with everybody.”
Gaza Sun Birds said: “Tony is the type of person you just can’t miss. He is committed to making sure the world gives attention where it’s due. Now he deserves our love — we hope people find him safe and sound.”
Distinctive and Loved Figure
Known for his signature watermelon-patterned cap and clothing in Palestinian flag colours, Tony’s unique look makes him easy to spot.
Anonymous friend sent a heartfelt message: “Tony, if you’re reading this, we want you to know how loved and missed you are. You’ve got all of east London out looking for you. We just want to know you’re safe.”
