Major Crash Closes M20 Near Swanley – Massive Delays to London Traffic

Emergency teams are scrambling after a nasty three-vehicle smash on the M20 near Junction 3 (Swanley) this morning, October 16, 2024. The crash, which happened just before 7am, has caused huge tailbacks and the motorway remains shut in both directions.

M20 Eastbound and Westbound Both Shut

The M20 eastbound between Junction 1 (M25) and Junction 3 (M26) is completely blocked due to the collision. Westbound lanes are also closed at Junction 1, bringing traffic to a standstill.

Traffic is being shifted off at the exit slip and diverted back on via the entry slip road to help ease congestion.

Long Delays For Drivers Heading Into London

Motorists aiming for London face massive gridlock extending back to Junction 2 (Dartford). Vehicles are being rerouted using the London-bound slip roads to bypass the crash zone, but delays remain severe.

  • Use the M25 and M26 as diversion routes
  • For traffic on the M25 clockwise heading towards Maidstone, it’s advised to take the A2 coastbound at Junction 2, continue on the M2, then join the A249 southbound at Junction 5

Emergency Services On Scene

“Kent Fire and Rescue Service has three fire engines at the scene, assisting Kent Police and the South East Coast Ambulance Service,” confirmed a National Highways spokesperson.

All traffic is currently held on the main carriageway between Junction 1 of the M25 and Junction 3 of the M26. The coastbound entry slip from the clockwise M25 remains closed as emergency crews continue their work.
