Helicopter Crash Sparks Major Emergency Near Burton in Lonsdale

A privately-owned helicopter has crashed into a field off Bentham Road near Burton in Lonsdale, sparking a massive emergency response this Monday lunchtime.

Dozens of Emergency Crews Rush to Scene

North Yorkshire Police and up to two dozen emergency vehicles raced to the rural back road between Ingleton and Bentham shortly before midday. The crash happened near Rivers Edge Holiday Park, leaving locals in shock.

The public is urgently advised to avoid the area as rescue teams scour fields for survivors.

Pilot Survived, Passenger(s) Missing?

Eyewitnesses report the helicopter was on fire after landing in the field. One source said the pilot was alive, but at least one other passenger may have bailed out before the crash. Police and air rescue crews, including a helicopter equipped with thermal imaging, have been searching the area for missing persons.

“The helicopter was on fire. We were told the pilot was still alive, but one or two others may have bailed out before it went down,” said a local fabrications worker who spoke with those at the scene.

A nearby firefighter added, “They appeared to be looking for someone. It was shocking—there aren’t many helicopters landing around here.”

Holiday Park Staff Help Out Amid Chaos

Staff from Rivers Edge Holiday Home & Lodge Park confirmed they assisted emergency teams but declined to provide details. One employee said, “People from the site went over to help. The manager is taken aback.”

A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed the air ambulance was dispatched but did not reveal casualty numbers.

North Yorkshire Police have not yet released further information on the crash or the condition of those involved.
