Power Cuts Leave Thousands in Southampton in the Dark

Thousands of homes and businesses across Southampton have been plunged into darkness this morning after a major power fault hit the area. The outage began at around 8.10pm Sunday, affecting roughly 5,000 properties, mainly in the SO14, SO17, and SO18 postcode districts.

What Happened? Two Faults Knock Out Power

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) reported two separate faults causing the blackout. The first, at midnight, cut power to 2,694 customers but has now been reduced to 600 still affected. The second fault at 12.12am took out 1,794 customers; however, 1,304 were back online within two minutes. Currently, 493 remain without power due to the second fault.

That leaves about 1,093 homes and businesses still battling the blackout this morning. SSEN engineers are on the job and aiming to restore power to the majority by 3am.

Areas Hit Hardest

The affected zones cover a vast stretch of Southampton, mainly within the SO14, SO17, and SO18 postcodes. Some of the hardest-hit areas include:

  • SO14 (including SO14 0DZ, SO14 6FT, SO14 6QZ, and many more)
  • SO17 (covering SO17 1AB, SO17 1DX, SO17 1QL, SO17 2NF, and others)
  • SO18 (notably SO18 1JH)

Anyone affected can get live updates or report issues by calling the national powercut helpline at 105.

Still in the Dark? What You Need to Know

SSEN assures residents that crews are working hard to resolve the faults. Although a large number of customers are back online, about 1,100 remains offline early Monday morning. Power is expected to be restored by 3am, but keep safe and check on vulnerable neighbours.
