Shocking Scam in Andover: Pensioner Stung for £1,000 by Rogue Trader
An 80-year-old woman from Andover has been left out of pocket after falling victim to a doorstep con. The elderly victim responded to a flyer for ‘Tree and Garden Services’ hoping to get her patio re-laid.
£1,500 Quote Turns into a £1,000 Theft
On Friday 12 April, a man turned up at her home and quoted a hefty £1,500 for the job. The victim then withdrew the cash from her bank and handed over £1,000 to the trader.
But when she popped inside to make him a hot drink, the man vanished – taking the money with him. Attempts to contact the number on the flyer have since gone unanswered.
Police Issue Warning Over Cold-Calling Scams
Inspector Chris Taylor condemned the scam, calling it “a terrible crime taking advantage of the trust of a vulnerable lady.” He warned residents to stay vigilant.
“Cold calling fraud, either on the doorstep or via phone, is a district priority for the Test Valley. We urge people to use trusted tradespeople and watch out for vulnerable neighbours,” said Taylor.
The force advises against employing cold-callers. If approached, note down any details, including vehicle registration numbers – but only if safe – and report to police on 101.
