Pregnant Woman Rescued from Suspected Human Trafficking in Surrey Hospital
Nurse’s Sharp Eye Sparks Police Action
A vigilant nurse at Royal Surrey County Hospital raised the alarm last Thursday (16 May) over a pregnant woman from Albania, spotting red flags that led to a human trafficking investigation. The nurse grew suspicious of a 28-year-old woman from Godalming, who was accompanying the expectant mother in the maternity ward.
Interpreter Unlocks Victim’s Secret
Hospital staff arranged for an interpreter, giving the woman a chance to speak freely—out of earshot of her suspected captors. The victim’s account and further signs confirmed fears of modern slavery. Police were tipped off about a second suspect en route to the hospital, a 26-year-old man from Reading.
Two Arrested but Still Under Investigation
Officers swiftly arrested both suspects on suspicion of human trafficking offences. Both have since been released from custody but remain under investigation as the probe continues.
Spot the Signs, Speak Up
The victim has now been discharged and is receiving proper care thanks to hospital staff’s quick thinking. Authorities warn that modern slavery hides everywhere—even in Surrey. From nail bars to car washes, building sites and domestic work, exploitation could be occurring right under your nose.
- Modern slavery exploits society’s most vulnerable.
- It often hides in plain sight in everyday workplaces.
