Maidstone Shoppers Warned After String of Theft Spree
Shoplifters have been targeting Maidstone town centre, with six thefts reported in just a few days. Between 10am and 11.30am on 18 June 2019, a pensioner was robbed of cash from her handbag inside a Mill Street charity shop.
Days later, another victim had their phone and bank cards nicked while in a bar on Earl Street between 9.30pm and 11.30pm on 22 June. Other thefts have hit busy spots including High Street, Week Street, The Mall, and Fremlin Walk.
Police Urge Shoppers to Stay Alert
District Commander Chief Inspector Ray Quiller urged caution: “While no offences have been reported in July, our town centre team remains vigilant. We remind shoppers to take care and avoid becoming targets for opportunist thieves.”
Easy Tips to Keep Your Valuables Safe
- Never leave handbags unattended on prams, shopping trolleys, wheelchairs, or mobility scooters.
- Keep mobile phones in zipped handbags or secure pockets at all times.
- Use a purse chain if possible – these can help stop thieves in their tracks.
You can pick up a free purse chain at the ‘Ask Me’ shop in The Mall while stocks last.
