Free Covid Tests Now Available for Hauliers Heading to France

Hauliers travelling to France can now access free Covid testing at Rownhams northbound services, alongside the existing Sutton Scotney southbound site. But beware – there are no test facilities at Portsmouth International Port, and hauliers must have a valid negative Covid test within 72 hours before boarding their ferry.

Operation Transmission Boots Border Checks at Portsmouth

New Operation Transmission is cracking down on EU-bound lorries and trailers heading to Portsmouth Port. All hauliers must pass through triage points to prove they’re ‘border ready’ with correct paperwork before travelling. This includes those with unaccompanied trailers. Without a triage pass or pre-approved special load status, trucks will be turned away.

Key Triage Rules for Hauliers – Don’t Get Caught Out!

  • If coming from the north (M3, A34), hauliers must visit the main triage point (T1) on the A31 (postcode SO24 0HU). Follow the yellow and black signs.
  • Skipping T1 to use the small local triage site (T2) risks being sent home. T2 has very limited space and strict enforcement.
  • Allow an extra 30 minutes for triage and document checks to avoid missing your ferry.

Must-Have Documents & Special Load Exemptions

Hauliers must carry:

  • Valid ferry booking reference (no booking, no entry)
  • Valid passport
  • Movement Reference Numbers (MRN), Transit Accompanying Documents (TAD), and other relevant certificates
  • Negative Covid test within 72 hours of boarding

Special loads like animals, fresh or live shellfish, fresh fish, or abnormal loads (oversized or heavy) may skip triage if pre-notified. Hauliers must complete the special loads form 12-24 hours before sailing.

Ports Warn: No Valid Covid Test = No Travel

Portsmouth Port expects haulier traffic to rise in the coming weeks. If you arrive without the required paperwork or a valid Covid test, you face delays or being turned away. Use official government test sites only.

For all hauliers heading to Channel Islands or Portico services, the new rules do not apply – continue as normal.
