Small Find Uncovers Massive Drug Network in Kent Bust

Police Nab Dealer After Drug Haul in Car

Officers from the Tunbridge Wells Community Policing Team arrested 26-year-old Charlie Matthews on 21 October 2020. He was caught driving a suspicious Ford Focus parked on Carriers Road, Cranbrook. At first, police found just five small bags of cocaine hidden in a glasses case and £340 in cash during a search of the vehicle.

Mobile Phone Reveals Vast Drug Empire

But the real story emerged after a full digital download of Matthews’ mobile phone. It exposed his deep involvement in dealing Class A drugs across west Kent. The phone contained drug adverts and a detailed ledger tracking customer debts, cracking open a major supply chain.

Guilty Plea and Jail Sentence

Forensic tests linked Matthews, from Romford Road, Pembury, directly to the seized drugs. He pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court to possession with intent to supply cocaine. Another charge related to drug supply will remain on file. On 4 March 2022, Matthews was sentenced to two years and two months behind bars.

Police Warn Drug Dealers: We’re Watching You

Sergeant Ed Kavanagh said: “This sentence again illustrates just how effective our officers are in identifying offenders, who wrongly believe they can operate within our communities without consequence. I can assure residents we will continue to make the streets a hostile environment for anyone involved in the supply of drugs. Please also remember to let us know straight away if you see anything suspicious. Call 999 if it is a crime in progress, otherwise contact 101.”
