Johnson Vows No More Undetected Boats on UK Waters
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has pledged to stamp out illegal Channel crossings with a £50 million blitz on new boats, aerial surveillance, and military boots on the ground. His mission? To ensure no boat reaches the UK undetected.
Tough New Laws Target People Smugglers
Johnson unveiled the Nationality and Borders Bill, promising to separate legal arrivals from illegal ones. The crackdown includes life sentences for anyone found piloting these dangerous migrant boats.
“This will send a clear message to those piloting the boats: if you risk other people’s lives in the Channel, you risk spending your own life in prison,” Johnson warned.
Rwanda Deportations Start, But Legal Battles Loom
Illegal entrants will be “swiftly and humanely” shipped off to safe third countries, including distant Rwanda, where many asylum seekers will face processing, Johnson revealed. However, he admitted the plan isn’t ready yet and expects legal challenges.
“We are confident that our new migration partnership is fully compliant with our international legal obligations. But nevertheless, we expect this will be challenged in the courts,” he said.
Critics Slam PM’s Anti-Immigration Push as Distraction
Opponents, including former minister Anna Soubry, branded the policy “distraction nonsense” and a “shameful waste of taxpayers’ money.” Many see it as a smokescreen, coming soon after Johnson became the first PM fined for breaking his own rules.
Johnson’s Realistic Take on Ending Channel Crossings
When pressed if small boat crossings would be eradicated, Johnson was frank:
“Can I guarantee that we’re going to get rid of the small boats problem? No, obviously not. But I think that what we can hope to do is to demolish the business model and greatly to deter those who come here.”
