NHS Apprenticeships: Your Shortcut into Healthcare
Think a university degree is the only ticket into healthcare? Think again. The NHS offers a slew of apprenticeships that kick off right after GCSEs or A-Levels — no degree needed.
Over 86,000 Apprenticeships and Counting
Since 2016-17, more than 86,000 apprenticeships have launched, with nearly 49,000 in clinical roles. Nursing leads the pack, including routes like nursing associate apprenticeships. But that’s not all. You can also train in allied health professions such as physiotherapy, podiatry, radiography, and paramedic work.
Fancy working in science or pharmacy? Options include pharmacy technician, lab technician, and healthcare science roles. Not a hands-on person? The NHS also needs staff in human resources, admin, IT, and finance.
NHS Bosses Back Apprenticeships
“Our apprenticeship programme gives young people more choice about their future career and a route into healthcare,” said Mark Radford, Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Nurse at Health Education England.
“The NHS offers apprenticeships across many roles, helping people build expert careers in health.”
“We’re thrilled that over 6,000 aspiring nurses have signed up for nursing degree apprenticeships to become registered nurses.”
This shows the NHS is serious about giving hardworking staff a leg up to climb the career ladder.
Government Cheers on New Nurses
Maria Caulfield, Minister of State for Health, said: “Congrats to all who got their GCSE results and welcome to those joining our nursing ranks.”
“Nursing is a rewarding career — you get to change lives every day. Apprenticeships make it accessible for many.”
