Canterbury Police Boost Freshers’ Safety with Major Outreach
Canterbury’s Community Safety Unit has been on a mission to keep freshers safe during their first week at uni. Police and PCSOs pitched up at campuses across the city, handing out safety kits and expert advice to thousands of students.
Safety Stalls at All Major Universities
From Monday 19 September 2022, officers set up stalls at the University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University, and the University for the Creative Arts. Students picked up personal safety alarms, drink protection devices, and city route maps. The aim? To help freshers navigate the city safely and avoid trouble.
Nighttime Safety Hub for Freshers on the Prowl
On Thursday 22 September, the police joined forces with Canterbury City Council, South East Coast Ambulance Service, and Kent Fire and Rescue at a city centre hub. This allowed them to connect with freshers venturing out on their first nights out, offering support and reassurance.
Police Promise: Safe Year Ahead for Students
“Around 40,000 students flood Canterbury every year,” said Sergeant John Woodward of the Community Safety Unit. “Many are living away from home for the first time. We’re working to make sure they get the support they need to stay safe and avoid becoming victims of crime.”
“We’re also rolling out the Best Bar None scheme across the city. This means all licensed venues will adopt tougher safety measures to prevent drink spiking and violence against women.”
“We wish all students a safe and productive year and urge them to contact the Community Safety Unit if they have any concerns.”
