Attempted Murder in Market Square Pub Horror
Drunken Rampage Sparks Violent Attack
Geoffrey Ryan, 53, spent the afternoon of 9 September 2022 drinking at The Lounge in Market Square. Arriving around 4pm, he appeared calm at first. But as the hours passed, his behaviour turned sour.
By 9pm, newly arrived security staff were targeted with abuse from Ryan. Just half an hour later, women at the venue reported harassment from him. Despite warnings, Ryan ramped up his aggression, hurling insults and eventually flinging a drink over one victim.
Security moved to eject Ryan, but he resisted, threatening and flicking a cigarette at staff. Undeterred, he left the pub but lingered nearby, hinting at further trouble.
Shock Razor Attack After Returning to Scene
Less than two hours later, Ryan pulled a terrifying U-turn. Donning a hood, he returned to the town centre in a Seat Ibiza, parking in a parent-and-baby bay at Sainsbury’s.
Striding back to The Lounge, he lurched at the same victim and slashed at his neck with a razor. The victim suffered a severe wound that demanded emergency lifesaving treatment.
Emergency crews arrived within minutes after Ryan was pinned down by members of the public. Police found him hiding next to a bush where he had discarded the blade.
Man Charged After Brutal Attack
- Ryan, from Brick Kiln Way, Braintree, was charged with attempted murder and racially aggravated harassment.
- He pleaded guilty only to grievous bodily harm with intent—an offer swiftly rejected by prosecutors citing clear intent to kill.
- After a week-long trial at Chelmsford Crown Court, Ryan was found guilty.
- Sentencing is set for 5 April.
Detective Inspector’s Grim Verdict
Detective Inspector Lydia George, Essex Serious Crime Directorate lead, said:
“It is no exaggeration to say this could very easily have been a murder investigation. Ryan showed clear intent to kill; there is no doubt this was attempted murder.
“Thanks to the swift action of officers and medics, the victim’s life was saved. The wound was millimetres from fatal.
“Ryan is a dangerous individual who has now been brought to justice. He faces a long custodial sentence in April.”
