Shoreham RNLI Lifeboats Race to Two Alarms — Both False!
False Alarm West of Worthing Pier
The Shoreham RNLI’s all-weather lifeboat was scrambled Thursday evening after reports of a possible casualty in the water west of Worthing Pier. The crew launched swiftly, speeding to the scene. But relief followed when the “casualty” turned out to be nothing more than floating fishing gear.
The call was a well-meaning false alarm. While waiting for the tide to rise, the crew made the most of their time with some impromptu training drills before heading back to base.
Inshore Lifeboat Recovers Abandoned Dinghy Near Brighton
Earlier the same day, the RNLI’s inshore lifeboat was launched after two fishermen spotted an empty small grey inflatable dinghy bobbing about 200 metres off King Alfred at Hove.
A thorough search led the crew to recover the mysterious craft, found a mere 20 metres from shore between Brighton’s piers. Questions remain over ownership — it may have been a tender from another vessel, left adrift.
The RNLI remains on high alert, ready for any real emergencies, but these recent callouts show the tricky line between caution and false alarms at sea.
