Undercliff Walk Safety Works Kick Off This Week
Safety crews are gearing up to tackle unstable rocks at the Undercliff Walk, starting Monday, 13 November. Expert contractors, skilled in abseiling, will clear loose debris to protect walkers and preserve the cliffs. This latest operation continues the spring efforts first launched in nearby Saltdean.
Cliff Face Cleanup Set to Last Six Weeks
Using hand scaling techniques, teams will carefully remove dangerous rock fragments over around six weeks — weather permitting. To keep the public safe, sections between Roedean and Rottingdean ramps will close temporarily. But don’t worry, local hotspots like chalets and the Ovingdean Beach Café will stay open, thanks to well-planned diversions.
Why This Rocks Removal Is Crucial
- Natural cliff erosion worsened by fierce wind, rain, and cold temperatures threatens stability.
- Preventing large-scale rockfalls protects visitors from serious injury or worse.
- Maintaining the cliff’s slope slows down ongoing erosion, preserving this iconic coast.
“Significant rockfalls detected earlier this year, especially in January, highlighted how vulnerable the cliffs are to harsh weather conditions,” reports a local safety official.
With winter approaching, these vital safety works could be a lifesaver for walkers on the Undercliff Walk. Stay safe, and expect some temporary detours!
