Hero PCSO Saves Woman from Choking on Sandwich
PCSO Sophie Lusher of Tunbridge Wells Community Safety Unit pulled off a life-saving rescue that earned her top honours from the Royal Humane Society. The brave officer was presented with her award at Kent Police’s Chief Constable awards ceremony on February 27, 2024.
Quick Thinking on Pembury Road
On the afternoon of June 27, 2023, while patrolling Pembury Road, PCSO Lusher spotted a woman in a parked car frantically waving for help. Without missing a beat, she stopped and rushed to assist.
The woman was choking on a sandwich. Using her first aid training, Lusher delivered abdominal thrusts and back slaps that cleared the blockage and saved the woman’s life.
From Rescue to Recovery
PCSO Lusher didn’t stop there. She escorted the woman to Tunbridge Wells Hospital for extra medical care, ensuring a full recovery. This quick, decisive action prevented a tragedy.
“PCSO Lusher’s dedication and quick response made all the difference,” said Chief Constable Tim Smith. “We’re grateful to her and all Kent Police staff who put the community’s safety first every day.”
Grateful Woman Visits, Shared Coffee Seals Bond
The heartwarming story didn’t end at the ceremony. The woman returned to the police station with flowers to thank PCSO Lusher personally. The two later met for a coffee at the woman’s home, cementing a special bond born from the rescue.
With nearly 17 years of experience and extensive first aid skills, PCSO Lusher remains humble:
“The real reward is knowing she’s safe and well,” she said.
PCSO Sophie Lusher’s heroics highlight the courage and compassion of Kent Police officers dedicated to protecting the public every day.
