Religious Terror Attack Shocks Sydney Church
Australian police have branded the brutal stabbing at Sydney’s Assyrian Christ The Good Shepherd Church a religiously motivated terrorist attack. The shocking assault happened during mass on Monday, targeting a bishop, a priest, and several parishioners. A 16-year-old boy has been arrested over the incident.
Victims Battle Injuries After Chaos at Wakeley
At least four people were hurt in the violent spree, including the attacker, but all have “non-life-threatening” injuries, police say. The attack unfolded live on the church’s online stream, sparking panic and chaos in the Wakeley suburb. Two officers were also injured amid the disorder, which caused major damage to church property.
Prime Minister Condemns Attack, Urges Calm
Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese slammed the assault as “disturbing” and called for peace. “Australia stands firmly against violent extremism,” Albanese said, urging the public to leave the investigation to the police and avoid vigilante acts.
Religious Motive Confirmed; Victims Undergoing Surgery
NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb revealed the bishop and priest are in surgery but expected to survive. Authorities said the attacker made religiously charged remarks before launching the violent spree, targeting those in the church and the online congregation.
The suspect, although known to police, was NOT on any terror watch lists. Investigations continue to uncover if others were involved.
Community on Edge Following String of Violent Attacks
This stabbing follows a deadly rampage at a Sydney shopping centre that left seven dead. NSW Premier Chris Minns urged the public to remain calm and support police efforts while condemning any retaliatory violence.
The Wakeley area is home to a large Christian Assyrian community, many displaced from Iraq and Syria. Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel, one of the victims, is a respected leader known for his community work.
As police dig deeper and community leaders call for unity, Australians hope peace will prevail amid this wave of violence.
