In the early hours of this morning, a rescue operation was launched following an incident involving a small boat carrying asylum seekers off the coast of Deal. The distressing event unfolded at approximately 7:45 am in the vicinity of the Goodwin Sands.
Upon receiving the alert, the HM Coastguard swiftly mobilised, deploying Walmer and Ramsgate lifeboats alongside a coastguard helicopter from Lydd to the scene of the incident.
Thankfully, all individuals involved were successfully rescued from the small boat, with HM Coastguard confirming that they were safely disembarked and transferred to the care of relevant partner emergency services and authorities.
The incident comes against the backdrop of heightened concerns surrounding the perilous journeys undertaken by asylum seekers across the English Channel. Just four days prior, tragedy struck as at least five individuals lost their lives while attempting to make the perilous crossing.
Among the victims were a child, a woman, and three men, whose lives were tragically cut short in the treacherous waters of the Channel.
