Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has been fined for speeding after being caught doing 73mph in a 60mph zone on the M1 motorway. The case was dealt with under an administrative system called the Single Justice Procedure and was revealed by the Evening Standard newspaper today.

According to Sir Ed’s letter of explanation, he had attempted to pay a speeding ticket issued by Bedfordshire Police after being caught speeding near Caddington on the M1. However, due to a “genuine oversight,” he inadvertently failed to provide his driving license details. As a result, the matter was brought before magistrates in March.
At Luton Magistrates’ Court, Sir Ed received a £72 fine along with a £28 victim surcharge. Additionally, three points were added to his driving license. Notably, he was not required to pay prosecution costs.
A spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats stated, “Ed inadvertently broke the speed limit on the M1, which he is sorry for. He has paid the fine and accepted the points on his license.”
