Firefighters are continuing to battle a significant blaze that engulfed a bungalow in Cowplain after a garden fire escalated, spreading to a nearby fence and then onto the property.

Emergency services sprang into action around 2:30pm when reports emerged of a fire on Hazleton Way. Crews from Waterlooville, Horndean, Havant, and Cosham rushed to the scene to tackle the flames, while police officers were also present to manage traffic in the area.

Upon arrival, firefighters were met with a daunting sight as the roof of the bungalow was found to be “well alight.” Efforts were immediately directed towards containing the fire and preventing its further spread.

A Hampshire Fire Service spokesperson commented on the situation, stating, “Electrical engineers have been called to isolate the power, whilst police officers are on the scene to help manage the traffic. The fire in the roof space was stopped using hose reel jets, with crews still on the scene damping down.

Despite the challenges posed by the blaze, firefighters managed to successfully extinguish the flames. However, fire crews remain at the scene to ensure that any remaining hotspots are fully extinguished and to conduct thorough assessments of the property’s safety.

In response to inquiries regarding the cause of the fire, the spokesperson revealed, “Our Fire Investigation Officer determined that it was caused by a garden fire which spread to a fence and then onto the property.

As investigations into the incident continue, residents are reminded to exercise caution when engaging in activities that could pose fire risks, particularly during periods of warm weather when the risk of outdoor fires is heightened. Vigilance and adherence to fire safety guidelines can help prevent similar incidents in the future.
