Derek McOwen, a 29-year-old man, has been sentenced to ten and a half years in prison after a violent incident in Belfast city centre in July 2022. McOwen pleaded guilty to two counts of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and a charge of possessing a bladed article in a public place during a previous hearing at Belfast Crown Court.

The attack occurred during the early hours of July 7, 2022, when McOwen indiscriminately targeted two strangers. The first victim was assaulted in Bedford Street, and the second in Amelia Street. Both men sustained severe injuries that required extensive medical treatment.

Detective Sergeant McGearty, who investigated the case, emphasised the seriousness of McOwen’s actions. “These unprovoked attacks left two innocent individuals with life-altering injuries,” said McGearty. “Our priority is to ensure public safety, and McOwen’s sentence reflects the gravity of his crimes.”

In addition to the custodial sentence, McOwen will serve a three-year extended licence upon his release from prison. This measure aims to monitor and manage his behaviour during the reintegration process.
