Waste Dumping Scandal Rocks Saltburn: Local Man Slapped with Cleanup Order
Martin Booker, 60, from Brotton, has been hit with a fine and a strict order to clear illegally dumped waste near Saltburn after turning his land into an unauthorised rubbish tip.
Burning Waste and Ignoring Warnings
Booker ran a rogue waste site on unregistered land off Gladstone Street, right next to council allotments. He burnt the dumped waste and brushed off multiple warnings from the Environment Agency to stop. Last month, he pleaded guilty at Teesside Magistrates’ Court to three offences of dumping waste without the proper environmental permits.
He was fined £648 and hit with a £259 victim surcharge. On top of the cash penalty, Booker must now clear the mess he created or face further legal trouble.
Rubbish Rubbish Everywhere: From Fridges to Prams
An Environment Agency visit in February 2022 uncovered a shocking pile of rubbish including scrap electricals like fridges and washing machines, shopping trolleys, vehicle parts, and signs of burning.
- By May 2022, much of the waste was cleared — but Booker quickly resumed his illegal dumping.
- October 2022 saw even more rubbish dumped, including a pram, a three-piece sofa suite, and a TV.
- By January 2023, the site was still piled high with burning waste.
Despite Booker’s denial of responsibility and claims that fly-tippers were to blame, council evidence showed him spotted in a scrap van in Saltburn in October 2023, linking him directly to the mess.
Official Outrage as Local Community at Risk
“Environmental permits exist to protect the public and environment. Booker ignored repeated warnings, showing blatant disregard for the law,” said Gary Wallace, Area Environment Manager for the Environment Agency.
Wallace added that illegal dumping hurts legitimate waste businesses and endangers local residents and wildlife.
Local councillor Adam Brook backed the prosecution and praised the joint effort between the council and Environment Agency. He said strong enforcement is vital to protect communities and keep neighbourhoods clean.
