Kent Fire and Rescue Service responded to a fire at a house on Scott Road, Gravesend earlier today. The fire, believed to have been caused by items left on a hob that was accidentally switched on, prompted the dispatch of two fire engines to the scene.
Firefighters, equipped with personal protective equipment (PPE) and breathing apparatus, quickly brought the blaze under control using high-pressure hose reel jets. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Following the incident, fire crews are reminding residents to keep hobs clear of any items, even when they are turned off, to prevent accidents like this one. The fire service also shared additional kitchen safety tips, including:
- Always stay in the kitchen while cooking and avoid distractions.
- Keep ovens and grills clean and free of grease and fat buildup.
- Ensure flammable items like tea towels are kept at least 50cm away from the hob.
- Only run appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines when you’re home and awake.
- Avoid cooking if you’ve been drinking alcohol.
- If a fire breaks out, evacuate immediately, call 999, and do not attempt to re-enter the property.
- Use timers and follow the cooking instructions on food packaging.
Kent Fire and Rescue continue to stress the importance of vigilance in the kitchen to prevent further incidents.
