Radio star Roman Kemp drops antidepressants after 16 years – opens up on emotional rollercoaster!

Roman Kemp’s Bold Mental Health Move

Radio presenter and mental health champion Roman Kemp has revealed a groundbreaking update in his journey. At 31, he’s stopped taking antidepressants for the first time since he was just 15. Roman took to Instagram to share the news, reflecting on the emotional highs and lows his decision has brought.

He explained it’s been four months off medication – a lifeline for more than 16 years. Despite some new emotional challenges, Roman is eager to get to know his feelings without the meds.

“Now while I’m still learning about why I suddenly want to cry more and may get snappier at my friends, I’m excited at understanding what the emotional side of me is really like,”

Roman stressed this choice is personal, not a swipe for or against antidepressants. “They helped me through a long period of mental struggle in my life, but I’m now ready to move on. Only posting in case anyone was ever worried about starting/stopping ❤️.”

Fans and Celebs Rally Behind Roman

The candid confession sparked an outpouring of support from fans and famous pals.

  • Musician Professor Green said, “Would love to bend your ear at some point bro… huge step after all that time ❤️.”
  • Drag Race UK star Cheryl Hole praised his bravery: “I’ve tried coming off mine but I’m not just there yet. Your honesty constantly inspires me ❤️.”
  • Broadcaster Sian Welby cheered: “Oh mate well done, this is such a big deal. Start of a new era. So proud of you ❤️.”

Other stars like Maya Jama, Alison Hammond, and Hannah Waddingham also sent heartfelt messages of love and encouragement.

Roman’s Mental Health Mission

Roman Kemp has never shied away from sharing his battle with depression. He became a vocal advocate after the tragic 2020 suicide of close friend and radio producer Joe Lyons.

In 2019, Roman fronted the documentary Roman Kemp: Our Silent Emergency, opening up about his own struggles with suicidal thoughts.

He’s called for mental health education to start earlier than typical school lessons, telling an interviewer:

“Talking about mental health needs to start earlier than when we get to 16 and we’re doing PSHE. It has to be engrained into lessons… as early as possible.”

A Powerful New Chapter

Going off antidepressants marks a major new chapter in Roman’s life. Now he’s focused on understanding his “raw” emotions and breaking stigma around mental health. His bravery inspires fans and reminds everyone they’re not alone in the battle.
