Kent Police Crack Down on Speeding in National Blitz
From Monday 26 July to Sunday 8 August 2021, Kent Police will join forces nationwide in a hard-hitting operation targeting speeders. The National Police Chiefs’ Council leads the campaign to educate drivers and enforce laws against dangerous speeding.
Speeding: A Deadly Threat on UK Roads
Speeding is a top cause of fatal crashes, alongside not wearing seatbelts, drink or drug driving, and mobile phone use behind the wheel. These deadly habits lead to serious injuries and deaths every year.
Active Policing and Community Watch Unite
- Kent’s Road Safety Unit, backed by Special Constabulary volunteers and roads policing teams, will patrol speeding hotspots across the county.
- The Safety Camera Team will target known locations to deter reckless drivers.
- Community Speedwatch volunteers will monitor approved areas with 20, 30, and 40mph limits, sending warning letters to motorists caught speeding.
Police Warn Speeders: Expect Serious Consequences
In April 2020’s similar operation, Kent saw over 10,800 speeding offences, with more than 500 serious enough for court.
Chief Inspector Elena Hall, Head of Roads Policing: “Most drivers are responsible, but too many still speed recklessly, endangering everyone on the road. Cars are lethal weapons—the faster you drive, the less time to react and the worse the crash. We will take tough enforcement action against any reckless speeding, not just during this operation but every day.”
Kent Police continue working with councils and Highways England to keep roads safe and help everyone reach their destination without tragedy.
