Reckless Driver Mows Down Teen at 70mph After Police Chase

Kwame McKenzie ploughed through the streets at over 70mph—more than twice the speed limit—after refusing to stop for police. His dangerous joyride ended in tragedy when he struck 15-year-old Danae Mills-Beresford, hurling her 16 metres along the road.

Teen Girl Left With Life-Changing Injuries

Now 16, Danae faces a lifetime of pain and disability. She has permanently lost feeling in one foot and must wear a splint forever. Her mother Kelly Mills revealed the emotional toll is just as severe. “She’s suffered so much — the hospital stay away from family was tough, and she’s in constant pain,” Kelly said.

“She needs counselling to help her come to terms with what happened. The driver’s actions caused all this suffering. I’m relieved he’s finally facing justice.”

High-Speed Police Pursuit Ends in Chaos

McKenzie was spotted driving erratically on the A610 Nuthall Road on October 29, 2019. Police chased him for over two miles as he mounted pavements and sped recklessly. At Broxtowe Lane and Stockhill Lane, he slammed into Danae at approximately 69mph, throwing her into the air.

He then continued his desperate escape, ramming a tree on Bell’s Lane before fleeing on foot. A dropped jacket and phone confirmed he was behind the wheel during the collision.

Jailed for Two Years — Justice Served

After turning himself in four days later, McKenzie, 22, pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop. Nottingham Crown Court sentenced him to two years in prison and banned him from driving for three years.

Detective Louise Melbourne slammed his “appalling and inexcusable” behaviour. “He showed no concern for his victim, who could have been killed. Danae now lives with lifelong injuries and immense trauma. I thank her family and the public for their support.”

An Independent Office for Police Conduct investigation cleared officers of wrongdoing during the chase.
