Kent Fire Heroes Honoured for Life-Saving Bravery
Firefighters, volunteers, support teams, and everyday heroes were celebrated in style at the Kent Fire and Rescue Service’s (KFRS) annual awards on 4 December. The event honoured those who risked it all to save lives and support their communities, plus paid tribute to decades of dedicated service within KFRS.
Dad and Son Race Into Burning Home to Rescue Neighbour
Top of the night’s heroes were Derek and Danny Brown from Herne Bay. When flames engulfed their neighbour Norman’s bungalow, they didn’t hesitate.
Norman, immobilised by multiple sclerosis, was trapped inside the smoke-filled house. Derek and Danny, joined by others, charged in and carried him to safety. Though Norman later died from unrelated health issues, his sister Jackie hailed the Browns’ heroism:
“Norman couldn’t believe people would risk their own lives to save his. Their selfless actions undoubtedly gave me more precious time with my brother, and I can never thank them enough for that.”
Daring River Rescue and Charity Champions Shine
Another standout act came from Dan Fiveash, who plunged into the chilly River Medway to save a drowning man—while working his shift at ASDA Living in Maidstone. His daring rescue stunned the crowd.
KFRS Crew Manager Michael Cramer also took home the Chief Executive Award for his heartfelt work supporting Elenor Children’s Hospice. Michael and his team threw a special open day for 24 children from the hospice and their siblings, complete with medals and goodies—a day full of smiles and recognition.
KFRS Pays Tribute to 50+ Years of Service
More than 50 KFRS personnel were honoured for their long-standing commitment to keeping Kent and Medway safe. Chief Executive Ann Millington praised all the winners:
“Every person honoured at this year’s awards has shown compassion, kindness, and bravery to someone in need. They are exceptional people, and I congratulate everyone who received an award. Thank you for everything you do to help keep Kent and Medway safe.”
